Contemporary public space in CR is a sensitive topic for discussions. High quality landscape elements are to be found less often than it should be in the case of a capital city. However, projects of prominent architects that have already been finished can give a good presentation of a relationship to history and future.

The CZECHSCAPE exhibition presents a selection of projects of landscape architecture and realisations in public space in CR. In a friendly way it invites to a reflexion of contemporary state where landscape architecture in CR smoothly rises and the time has come to compare the results with more advanced countries of Europe.

2/ Eunic Landscape Architecture

The exhibition presents 36 projects realized in 18 European countries and examples of new approaches to, and perception and use of the environment shaped by man – all for new, primarily recreational and sports use, for meetings, culture and education.

3/ Krajiny z druhé ruky

The exhibition focuses on presentation of projects from the prepared book monography “Second Hand Landscapes – new identity of industrial landscape and specific features of creation of green areas in post-industrial areas”.

The exhibition and the catalogue present inspiration examples from Germany that solve the ways of implementation of well-working approaches to the Czech environment. The exhibition shows realisations adaptable for the Czech region. Exhibited projects should work as patterns for contemporary possibilities for restoration of former industrial areas.

4/ Landscape architects NOW!

The exhibition Landscape architects NOW! presents projects of domestic and foreign landscape architects from North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. The primary goal of the authors of the exhibition is to draw attention to the topic of landscape architecture and its creators.

B/ PREZENTATIONS AND PROJECTS

• City district of Prague 3

The presentation of both implemented projects and unrealized designs relating to the organization of the public space in the Borough of Prague 3 constitutes an attempt to engage the public in decision-making with regard to the form of the public space. The aim of the intervention is to curb traffic and to improve the navigability of the terrain and recreational use of streets, parks and squares.

• Office of Public Space IPR Prague 

The Details? presentation focuses on a number of specific sites in Prague and reveals the way they are read by the members of Office for Public Space. The conclusions of their research are represented by the exhibited documents recently compiled by the Office for Public Space.

• Proměny Foundation/ Changes of the island of Santos

The Santos Island Transformations installation mounted by the Proměny Foundation and the sculptor Václav Fiala presents a project for rejuvenation of the forest park on the river island in Sušice realized in 2013 according to an architectural design by the Florart studio. The motto of the project was “Wade across the river. Listen to the silence. Watch the sky. Sit on the grass. Welcome the boaters.”

• Automat

Prague Vision 2025 is a new document from the Auto*Mat initiative, which shows Prague in 2025 as a functional city in which the demands of sustainable transport, economic development, quality public space and a healthy environment are achieved and harmonized.

Faculty of Garden and Landscape Architecture FAPPZ, Czech Agricultural University in Prague

What is our relationship to the Czech landscape? Is it for us only a window decoration or a story we enter into? The faculty’s presentation presents an imaginary Round of the Czech Landscape, which should evoke new feelings and questions in us.

Faculty of Horticulture, Mendel University in Brno 

The exhibited pieces consist of a selection from the portfolio of the Garden and Landscape Architecture programme of the Faculty of Horticulture, Mendel University in Brno. We present works from thematic workshops, outcomes of collaborations with cultural institutions and especially a wide range of dissertation and studio work.

• EnviroCity

EnviroCity in cooperation with Landscape Festival Prague will bring life to the industrial spaces of Žižkov Freight Railway Station through a series of presentations, debates and artistic performances. The festival is organized by the Collaborative Collective civic association and the Loop environmental pavilion will be its main stage.

• Sekyra Group 

Presented in the context of the Landscape Festival Prague 2014 are projects of the development company Sekyra Group, which handles the development of commercial and residential buildings. The presentation focuses on three development projects for extensive railway lands with the titles Smíchov City,  Žižkov City and Rohan City.

• ARCHWERK/ Martin Kloda, Tomáš Feistner, Hana Procházková – The Quart

The installation reacts to the bland sterilisation of the landscape, either urban or rural, which for us has become an overlooked given. Fortunately we still have the powerto revive the landscape, to awaken it in a whole new story. Sometimes it’s enough to just say the words or gesture for “One beer!”

There is a difference between landscape and wilderness. The landscape is an urban or rural space, cultivated by people. Wilderness is uninhabited and uninhabitable. In our world, we have lost the balance between landscape and wilderness, we have lost our relationship to both of them. Fortunately, we can inspirit our landscape with a new story. We can do it by single word or simple sign.

• Kurt Gebauer – Little Heads (2011)

Concrete Little Heads, the artist’s favourite topic, have become a travelling exhibition. Created in 2011, they were first installed on the ventilator on Jan Palach Square, then in 2013 they were lined up in front of the National Technical Library in Dejvice. They’ll be a super-traveller on a wagon at Žižkov Freight Train Station. Always another story? What that will be is up to each of us to discover on our own.

• a05/ Martina Forejtová+Jana Pyšková – River Beach (2014)

The river is a place that always makes you feel like watching …the scene is nearly ready with its meanders, gravel stones, willows whispering and ripples chasing on water surface…flowers here and there…just to lie down, observe…chat or be quiet, left undisturbed… the summer in Prague…Troja, Smíchov or maybe Libeň?

• Lenka Klodová – Shaping – The Landscape after the Battle (2014)

Shaping – The Landscape after the Battle represents an artificially created landscape which was the product of a duel between two women in plaster – a battle against each other and against time and the hardening material. As a result they created a true post-battle landscape out of material used to create architectural models.

• Kokoza – Tasty Wagon (2014)

An allegorical wagon from the social enterprise Kokoza serves to present urban and community gardening, composting, and growing vegetables, herbs and flowers. Gardeners from urban and community gardens throughout Prague and people with disabilities took part in the project.

Martin Marek: On the Border – Grenznah: document about the sympozium, 2014

The project documents installations from a symposium held at Tummelplatz gamekeeper’s lodge. The participants were again invited to present the cornerstone of the event, which was coming to terms with an unknown environment through their own work. Trees replace columns and cross struts. The hues of the vegetation alternate with rust and grey concrete tones. The strong atmosphere remains.

• Partero – Dining Car from Moravia (2014)

A wagon conceived by Partero studio arrives from Moravia. It became a dining car that, entirely in line with raw food principles, sells fresh food grown on straw bales right in a wagon compartment. Freshly ground rainwater coffee is served in traditional coffee sets found in Moravian homes.

• ontheEDGE (Daniel Matějka, Hana Syrová) – Swing the Czech Landscape! (2014)

The authors of the Swing the Czech Landscape! project want to highlight the potential of interesting sites and point to beautiful, yet hidden places in our neighbourhood in a joyful way. The swing is a symbol of common joy, playfulness and an open outlook. The installation forms part of the project “100 Swings for the Landscape”.

• Prazelenina for Žižkov Freight Railway Station (2014)

Architect Matěj Petránek and Jiří Novák established Prazelenina (“Prazelenina”, from “Pra” for Prague and “zelenina”, the Czech word for vegetables) in 2012. They were inspired in part by a community garden in Helsinki.

The garden and scheduled events are open to both growers and the greater public alike. The organisation provides space, pallets, bags, soil, tools and water for growers.

Prazelenina has planted various species of squash and gourds in a wagon at the freight train station, and in September the growers and organisers will harvest the fruits and prepare a squash feast in the garden.

• Vladimír Sitta – Tree which does not moan any more… (2014)

Every day 15 ha of land in the Czech Republic disappears under bulldozers.  This land once sustained us. It is being sterilized by bitumen and other ecologically inert materials. Our lifestyle depends now on the unprecedented denaturalisation of our environment. At the same time nature remains a potent source of inspiration. We can see a strong trend towards biomimicry in the architecture and design. In most cases it is confi ned to formal exercises only. Nature is replaced by artifi cial subnature.

• Vladimír Sitta – 50 Thujas for the Czech Landscape or where is my Home (2014)

The spectrum of changes in the Czech landscape is not confined only to canolaorgies of the agribusiness. Once there were lindens in village squares. Today we can see a new intruder. It has a lot of collaborateurs. It spreads like a virus. Conformity comes at the discount. A village in hills or a small/large city? A new symbol of exclusion. Once confined to cemeteries. Today ubiquitous. The tree is not one who was taught how to write…

• Dagmar Šubrtová – Coal

Dagmar Šubrtová’s objects thematically respond to the differences in the industrial landscape formed by geomorphological processes, especially in mining regions. Reflections aim at a sculptural interpretation of newly emerging sites that are a physical example of nature’s renewal.

• Eva Wagnerová – Our Way through the Landscape (2014)

In her work Our Trip through the Landscape, the author responds to themes that relate to the landscape – people making their way through the landscape versus the way of the landscape, the anthropogenic transformation of the landscape, our perception of the landscape and adapting it to our own image.  People are masters of their own landscape.
