JOIN – THE SOFA EXPIRIENCE
8/6–26/6/2015
Vítězné náměstí, Praha 6
A 62.1-metre-long urban sofa is the focal point of Aarhus Festival’s project ‘The Sofa Experience’. In 2015, the sofa will travel around the world and collect stories from the people it encounters along the way, and at the end of August it will return to the Aarhus Festival.
–
Designed by landscape architects Schønherr and produced by urban producer Flexys, the sofa is a rethinking of urban furniture, built of wedges called ‘pieces’. The wedges can be combined in a myriad of ways, creating a piece of furniture, a sculpture or a landscape element – or all these things at once.
Aarhus Festival director Jens Folmer Jepsen says about the idea of ‘The Sofa Experience’: “‘The Sofa Experience’ is in line with the Festival’s desire to show the world what Aarhus is good at. It’s a very effective way of emphasising the Festival’s great idea – that it is important for people to meet, so that new music might occur.”
Torben Schønherr, senior partner at Schønherr, says about the sofa’s design: “The material gives the same freedom as a Lego brick, and thus we can create all sorts of wonderful things. There are many options in the design, and the sofa can constantly be made into something else.”
–
A built-in light in the sofa backrest makes the urban furniture accommodating even in the evening and night. The wedges are created in a sustainable material and can be transported in one container so that the impact on the environment is minimised as much as possible.
Aarhus Festival invites everyone who takes pictures of the sofa and shares them on Instagram to use the hashtag ‘sofaexp’. In this way the best photos and videos can be assembled into a film about the sofa’s world tour before next year’s Festival week in Aarhus.
The sofa is donated by Tuborg Foundation and the sofa’s world tour is sponsored by the Corps Consulaire, Aarhus.
